Piolo Pascual, John Lloyd Cruz, Bea Alonzo, Angelica Panganiban, Coco Martin, and Kim Chiu are just some of the hottest and most bankable stars of ABS-CBN today. They are among the network’s most prized talents, whose presence can be felt in teleseryes, commercials, movies, and magazines. This month, YES! looks back on their road to stardom, and pays tribute to 20 years of Star Magic, showbiz’s biggest star maker. In a 38-page feature story, YES! offers a comprehensive account of Star Magic’s humble beginnings, its history, and the science behind its star-making process.YES! sat down with Star Magic’s chairman emeritus Johnny Manahan, also known as “Mr. M,” who recounted how the formerly known as Talent Center was built from scratch 20 years ago.To resolve the network’s reliance on big stars controlled by big film companies, Manahan pioneered its creation, to which he discovered and developed ABS-CBN’s own homegrown talents.Auditions were held where a thousand of aspirants were narrowed down to only twelve or less. These hopefuls would undergo a series of trainings and workshops, which cover singing, acting, dancing, even makeovers, and styling.Every year, one group is formed—Star Circle Batch. One of the country’s top leading men today, Piolo Pascual, member of Star Circle Batch 3, recalls his audition 16 years ago.“I remember I was the only one wearing shorts. And I thought I wasn’t gonna get in because I was too casual and I wasn’t in, parang, my best element. I was 18, 19 then, kind of unsure and insecure.”This is where a keen eye for discovering talents comes in. A person who does the screening should be able to visualize what a shy aspirant could become.Mr. M. says, “I can see three years in advance, e, four years in advance… I don’t know why, but I got it, you know.”These stars must be able to showcase their talents to ensure that they don’t vanish from the public eye. This is what Mariole Alberto, the current head of Star Magic, calls the “succession plan.”Although the creation of stars is a business for Star Magic, the people behind ABS-CBN’s talent management arm make sure they take care of their talents like family.Kim Chiu relates, “Sina Mr. M and Ms. Mariole… sila na ‘yong family adviser ko talaga. Since wala naman akong mommy and daddy and I live alone dito sa Manila, sila na ‘yong mom and dad ko.”Star Magic also helps in managing their talents’ finances. A portion of the stars’ income goes to a bank account, which will become their fallback once showbiz career is no longer lucrative. In the interview, Manahan also gives his two cents worth on how a star is made, the rise and fall of talents, and dealing with piracy and negative publicity.Find out more about Star Magic’s 20 colorful years!YES! also shares must-know trivia about your favorite stars, and stories about the most memorable love teams made in the last couple of years. Also on the special gatefold cover are Shaina Magdayao, Gerald Anderson, Maja Salvador, Erich Gonzales, and Enchong Dee.YES! is available in all newsstands, bookstores and supermarkets nationwide for only P100. You can also become a fan of YES! on Facebook via Facebook.com/yesmagazine.ph.A digital version of YES! is also available. Much has been said about Andi Eigenmann in the past year.
While her unplanned pregnancy left her abandoned by the baby’s father, Andi braved the nine-month storm, with her family rallying behind her until she gave birth to Adriana Gabrielli, or “Elle” for short.
Five days before her due date, Andi found time to sit down with YES! magazine for an exclusive interview, which is the basis for the feature on her in the January issue of the country’s number one entertainment magazine.
The 11-page exclusive features photographs of Andi and Baby Elle taken just five days after Andi gave birth.
It also walks us through the first moment that Andi discovered she was pregnant—a moment she shared with the “baby daddy” whom she refuses to name on the record, but whom many speculate is her ex-boyfriend Albie Casiño—down to her first weeks as a new mother.
Andi also talks lengthily about her failed relationship with the “baby daddy” and how, despite knowing about her condition, he never made an effort to check on her throughout her entire pregnancy.
"Hindi nag-follow-up. Wala. Basta na lang siyang nag-vanish na parang bula.”
If he suddenly makes his presence felt in the future and expresses an interest in his child, Andi laments, “Ano, papakahirap muna ako, at pag wala na ‘yong paghihirap, pag cute na si Elle, pag nabuo ko na siya nang maayos, ‘tsaka ka lang nandiyan?”
She does, however, acknowledge that it’s her child’s right to meet her father. “For my baby, I won’t deprive her of that, because that’s her right… Kawawa naman siya. She has a right to meet her dad, so I’m just hoping for that.”
Andi opens up to YES! about how she’s raising her newborn child and her dreams for Baby Elle.
Fully prepared to raise Baby Elle on her own, Andi says, “I can just try my best and make sure that I won’t give her a reason to need her real dad.”
The January issue of YES! also features the weddings of Jolina Magdangal and Mark Escueta, Kyla and Rich Alvarez, and Nonito and Rachel Donaire.
It also gives you a deeper look into the Rhian Ramos and Mo Twister scandal that is rocking local showbiz.
